When You're Not in a Healthy Place

Most of us know our bodies well enough to know when something is wrong. They may be small things at first that get our attention, but all of a sudden we begin to notice more and more that something that was “right” before, is “not right” now. So we may say to ourselves, I need to go to the doctor to check things out, sometimes we even begin to ask our family and friends casually, “have you ever felt like…?” We are in tune to our bodies and most of us don’t want to wait too long before we find out if something is wrong.

It’s not always like that with our spiritual health. I believe that the same God that sensitizes us to things wrong with our bodies, and causes us to take notice, also sensitizes us when we are not in a healthy spiritual place. We may have gotten so busy that we fail to do our daily Bible reading, we may run out of the house rushing every day and failed to pray, those are the preventive vitamins, that will keep a healthy spirit healthy! However, once our spirit has been afflicted, it takes more than prayer and Bible reading to make it whole!

One sign that our spirit is being attacked and probably on the way to an unhealthy place is when we begin to notice all the things that are wrong with our life. All the things we wished to happen, that haven’t happened, how much we do for others, and how little they do for us, in essence how unfair our life really is.Proverbs 13:12a says: “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick” When we are on the “wait list” too long, and we begin to complain about it – we are on the road to poor spiritual health!

How do we avoid this? I’m not sure we can avoid it. We’re human – we have dreams and ambitions and goals, and even though we’ve surrendered our lives to God and trust Him for our lives, perhaps because we have trusted Him with out lives, we become a bit resentful when things don’t work out the way we hoped because we feel as if we gave away our authority to God to handle our life and He failed us. I think this is one of the major attacks that come against believers. Just a spiritual nugget from God’s word won’t cure a broken heart.

Instead, just like when our body is afflicted, and we find out from the doctor what is wrong – the doctor prescribes a treatment plan. That plan, depending upon the nature of the affliction, may be as simple as getting more rest, and slowing our pace down, to completely changing our lifestyle – from diet and exercise to more intense treatment – antibiotics, physical therapy, etc. It is no different with our spiritual life. When our spiritual life is under attack, we need someone in our life we are accountable to that can help us walk through a treatment plan. And when that plan is developed, we need to follow it – for our spiritual health is more important than our physical health, for even as the theme verse of HeartLife Ministries suggests:

Proverbs 4:23
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
