What Are You Passing On?
One of the greatest gifts one generation can give to another generation is the gift of a legacy of faith. Faith can’t be inherited like the proceeds from a 401K, or even through designating it in a well written will. Faith in God and in His Word is taught – not caught! Scripture instructs us with these words:
“SO YOU, my son, be strong (strengthened inwardly) in the grace (spiritual blessing) that is [to be found only] in Christ Jesus.
And the [instructions] which you have heard from me along with many witnesses, transmit and entrust [as a deposit] to reliable and faithful men who will be competent and qualified to teach others also.
Take [with me] your share of the hardships and suffering [which you are called to endure] as a good (first-class) soldier of Christ Jesus. @ Timothy 2: 1-3 (AMP)
In Sunday School and Vacation Bible School a favorite song is”
We are soldiers in the army,
I know we have to fight
I know we have to fight
We have to hold up the blood stained banner
We have to hold it up before we die.
This children’s song made it clear to anyone who sang it – this is not an adult war, it is a war where everyone has a part! Because of that children learned early that this is not an easy road – it is not a crowded road – it is a peculiar journey where peculiar people travel. On this road senior ushers mentored junior ushers – hence the usher board continued; youth leaders trained youth to be the next leaders; pastors had men that eagerly followed them around, waiting for the opportunity to do the things he did. There was a mother’s board who both badgered and taught the young women how to be mothers and servants of God!
The question today is – who is doing the teaching? Who is passing on the legacy of faith, tradition, and holiness unto the Lord? Because heaven isn’t going to be a one size fits all – the question rings out, “are you reproducing fruit after your kind?” Will the church continue to live, or will it dissolve bit by bit as the secular world is trying to do to it?
There is much work ahead of us. There are not only those who need to be taught to serve, but those who are waiiting to serve? They are waiting for the baton to be passed – they are waiting to pass it on!
God Bless you,
Maria
