Housekeeping Rule # 2 – Leave and Cleave!
“And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam; and while he slept, He took one of his ribs or a part of his side and closed up the [place with] flesh. And the rib or part of his side which the Lord God had taken from the man He built up and made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. Then Adam said, This [creature] is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh and she shall be called woman because she was taken out of man. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall become united and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Genesis 2:21-24 (AMP
)
The second housekeeping rule for man was to “leave and cleave” – for a man and woman to leave their father and mother and to cleave one to another. When God made woman out of the rib of Adam, He established a prototype symbolic of the union that would later be expressed in our relationship with Jesus Christ.
“Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. In the same way that a branch can’t bear grapes by itself but only by being joined to the vine, you can’t bear fruit unless you are joined with me.
“I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can’t produce a thing. Anyone who separates from me is deadwood, gathered up and thrown on the bonfire. But if you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon.” John 15: 4-6 (MSG)
Again, God gave very clear instructions. The first institution that He ordained for man in his new house was the family. Not various kinds of families – but the family that flowed from one man and one woman, for a lifetime. Culture changes emerged which instituted multiple forms of marriage and family, but they were not God’s original design. This is so important to understand as we encounter perhaps the greatest culture war that mankind has ever faced, man inspired by the “world, the flesh, and the devil” may try to improvise and devise new marriage and family relationships – but they are not God’s design!
When we try to reconstruct God’s word to fit a counter-culture – we are at risk of dissolving the most important revelation on earth–
“And I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, Who calls you by your name.” Isaiah 45:3 (AMP) zocor neuropathy
When we yield to the systems of this world, we forsake knowing the Lord, and the personal relationship He longs to have with us. We become blind to the gospel and instead of grasping the “treasures of darkness and the hidden riches of secret places,” we wander about lost and hopeless turning to counterfeit pleasures that will never satisfy. Housekeeping Rule #2 has more benefits than meet the eye!
