Double Vision by Pastor Doug Neal
In 2 Kings 6:16 the prophet Elisha and his servant are surrounded by a Syrian army. As the servant sees the situation, he says to the prophet, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” Elisha calmly responds, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Sensing the servant’s confusion Elisha prayed, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Suddenly the servant began to see horses and chariots on the mountains and the fire of God around Elisha.
Having double vision is usually seen as a visual impairment. But in the passage above we discover the need to see double; the need to see beyond what we see. In every situation we encounter there is always something else going on beneath the surface. This is why it is always important for us not to react rashly when trials arise but to pray for God to show us what to do so that His will can be done and we can be blessed.
When we encounter difficulties in life we have to know that God not only has a way out for us but that He is using those difficulties to make life better for us and to make us better people. This does not always feel good or satisfy our personal desires. It sometimes means enduring hardship or even suffering loss. But if we are faithful to trust Him He is faithful to bring us through our trials and bless us in ways beyond our imagination.
We must have faith that God will bring us out of the situations we are going through. If you are having difficulty seeing God in your situation, look closer. Ask God to give you double vision to see beyond what you see. Know that He is working on your behalf to make things better and mature you into a more effective steward of your life. Trust His Word for He has surely promised that all things will eventually work for your good if we love Him and are operating according to His purpose.
