What is in Your House?

1 The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.”
2 Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a little oil.” 2 Kings 4:1 & 2NIV
A familiar passage of scripture, one we have all heard countless times preached – but my question to you is, how often do you practice this principle? The preached Word or even the Word you read is not doing you a bit of good unless you APPLY IT TO YOUR LIFE!

How many times have you, like me, had more month than the money? More questions, than answers? More frustration, than peace! How often have you sat in your home, confused and anxious because you seemed to be at a standstill in your life – feeling that you needed to do something, yet not knowing what exactly you should do? If you can’t acknowledge that you’ve been there – I pray for you right now (you might be guilty of having a spirit that is not quite truthful).

It is true – we have all been there at one time or another and probably more than once! We all can attest to the frustration of having tied hands and feet of clay, and a cry that went out to God our Father that seemed to go to the winds… Now that I know God better, I think He is very happy when we reach this place – for it is at this point that He has our full attention – we don’t have that wiggle room that enables us to figure out a new plan!

The woman in this story was left a widow, with two sons to care for. She had nothing in the house, the creditors were at her door demanding that if she could not pay them, she would have to turn over her sons to work the debt she had assumed (which was probably debt she didn’t make).

At this point she had a decision to make – should she give in quietly to the creditors? Should she rant and rage about what debt her husband had left her with – rehearsing over and over that he spent more time giving to the church, than providing for his family? Should she just withdraw and become depressed and be helpless?

Well, the good news is the widow woman decided to go to the place where her husband was employed. She decided to take her lack of insurance payments up with the employer? She didn’t retreat, she didn’t back down, she didn’t give up – she began her efforts with an appeal – reminding her husband’s employer that him that in fact her husband had been a good employee – doing the job he was assigned to – well!

This week we are going to focus on this topic – What is in your house? What is in your hand? Until tomorrow, why don’t you meditate on the above passage of scripture and see if you have anything in common with this widow woman?
